Is summer time always the busiest season for tourism?
Well, there are a few reason for that, first is that up or down the equator line, summer is always the longer vacation time for school, second summer is the most pleasant season as most of the people prefer warm weather. Is there any other reasons?
And what about Ferragosto and Italian Vacations?
Dating from the ancient Roman empire (by that time was Feriae Augusti) , Ferragosto is celebrated in august 15th and definetely is one of the busiest holidays in italian summer. Therefore, one can expect to find a lot of traffic jam and crowded places (mainly in the sea side).
Actually, not only Ferragosto, but also the whole month of august is well known for italian summer vacations. It is quite common to walk arround in the cities and see notices like "This shop will be closed from 1st to 31st of august for vacation". Hence, if you walk around smaller cities other than the great downtown areas, you might find desert cities with only very few, or sometimes none, grocery, farmacy and small bars open. Of course that touristic places are open during this time. Actually, this might be one of the busiest periods for tourism.

Just a remark, summer is not all about tourism. Before august vacations, starting more or less at first days of July, there is an Italian wide sold out that lasts until the end of august.
And what about my Ferragosto?
Well, company had a week off, so I took some time to get known better Italy. My vacation of Ferragosto I have spent in Cinque Terre, Dolomiti, Milano, Parma and Verona. Among all this places, I will like to write a little more about my time in Dolomiti.
See Liudmila Blog for some remarks of Ferragosto 2009.

Thank you for the link, Yamasaki. You have an interesting post about Ferragosto. I did not know this information even if I live in Italy for 14 years... Shame to me.
